Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination pill pairs aspirin with caffeine and hydrocodone for pain. The piece that matters here is the aspirin. There's some early human research suggesting that tamarind can boost how much aspirin your body absorbs, nudging your aspirin blood levels higher than expected.

If that happens, you may notice more of aspirin's usual downsides, things like stomach upset, heartburn, or a higher chance of stomach irritation and bleeding (such as easy bruising or dark stools). Keep in mind this is based on limited evidence, mostly tamarind eaten as part of a porridge, so everyday culinary amounts likely matter less than concentrated tamarind supplements. If you're considering a tamarind supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Tamarind

What is Tamarind?

  • Constipation and digestive upset
  • Culinary flavoring
  • Fever and sore throat
  • Antioxidant support
  • Traditional wound or skin care

Tamarind is a tangy tropical fruit widely used in cooking and traditional medicine, mainly for digestion and as a mild laxative. While it is a nutritious food, strong human evidence for most of its medicinal claims is limited, so use it mainly as a food and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated supplements.
