Lurasidone falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with pairing Thuja and Latuda (lurasidone). This isn't about Thuja changing how your body breaks down lurasidone. Instead, it's about an added-up effect. Concentrated Thuja products can contain thujone, a compound that may make the brain more prone to seizures. Lurasidone, like many antipsychotics, can also slightly lower the seizure threshold on its own. Put them together, and in theory the seizure risk could nudge a bit higher.

I'll be honest with you: this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not solid studies, so don't panic. Still, since Thuja offers little proven benefit and carries a real toxin, I'd lean toward skipping the supplement. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Lurasidone Used For?

Brand name: Latuda

Lurasidone hydrochloride tablets are approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17, and to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression) in adults and children aged 10 to 17. Latuda is one of the brand names under which lurasidone is available as a tablet.

For bipolar depression, lurasidone can be used on its own (monotherapy) in adults and pediatric patients aged 10 to 17, or used alongside lithium or valproate (adjunctive therapy) in adults.
