Fentanyl falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with combining Thuja and fentanyl. Thuja products can contain thujone, a compound that may make the brain more prone to seizures. Fentanyl, like other strong opioid pain medicines, can already lower the seizure threshold a little on its own. Stack the two together and you may, in theory, raise the seizure risk a bit more.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. The evidence here is anecdotal and largely theoretical, so I'm not trying to alarm you. Still, since fentanyl is a powerful medicine and concentrated Thuja oil can be genuinely toxic, I'd play it safe and skip Thuja supplements. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before using any Thuja product.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. What Is Fentanyl Used For?

Brand names: Sublimaze, Duragesic, Fentora, Lazanda, Abstral, Subsys

Fentanyl transdermal system is prescribed for severe, persistent pain that cannot be controlled with other pain medicines, including shorter-acting opioids. It is only for people who are already opioid-tolerant — meaning they've been taking a significant daily opioid dose for at least a week.

It is not for short-term pain, post-surgical pain, mild pain, or use on an as-needed basis. Because of serious risks including addiction, overdose, and death, it is reserved for situations where other treatment options have failed or are not appropriate.
