Baclofen falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with pairing thuja and baclofen. Thuja products, especially the oil, can contain thujone, a compound that acts on the nervous system and may make seizures more likely. Baclofen itself can lower the seizure threshold, and that risk goes up if someone stops it suddenly. Stack thuja on top, and in theory you could nudge that risk a little higher.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is mostly theoretical and based on anecdotal reports, not solid studies, so I don't want to scare you. Still, since thujone can be genuinely toxic, the cautious move is to avoid concentrated thuja products while you're on baclofen. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Baclofen Used For?

Brand names: Lioresal, Ozobax, Lyvispah, Fleqsuvy

Baclofen treats spasticity — the stiffness, muscle spasms, and rigidity that can come from neurological conditions. Oral forms (tablets, solutions, suspension, and granules) are used for spasticity from multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries or diseases. They are not intended for muscle spasm caused by rheumatic conditions like arthritis.

Intrathecal baclofen — delivered directly into the fluid around the spinal cord through an implanted pump — is reserved for severe spasticity that hasn't responded to oral baclofen, or when oral doses cause intolerable side effects. Gablofen (intrathecal injection) is specifically indicated for adults and children age 4 and older with spasticity of spinal or cerebral origin.
