Cetirizine falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with combining these two. Thuja, especially the undiluted oil, contains thujone, a compound that in larger amounts can be toxic to the nervous system and may make seizures more likely. Cetirizine (Zyrtec) is an antihistamine, and antihistamines as a group can slightly lower the seizure threshold. So the worry is that, in theory, the two together could nudge that risk a little higher.

I want to be honest with you: this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not solid studies, and cetirizine is one of the gentler, non-drowsy antihistamines. For most people the everyday risk is low. Still, since concentrated thuja can be genuinely toxic, I'd skip thuja supplements while taking cetirizine and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Cetirizine Injection Used For?

Brand names: Cetirizine, Zyrtec, Quzyttir

Quzyttir (cetirizine injection) is approved to treat acute urticaria — a sudden outbreak of hives — in adults and in children 6 months of age and older. It is given by intravenous (IV) injection in a medically supervised setting.

Quzyttir is not recommended for children under 6 years of age who have impaired kidney or liver function.
