Amphetamine falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with pairing Thuja and amphetamine. Concentrated thuja products (the leaf or oil, not the homeopathic dilutions) can contain thujone, a compound that's hard on the nervous system and may make seizures more likely. Amphetamine is a stimulant that, on its own, can already nudge the seizure threshold down a bit. Stack the two together and, at least in theory, you could be raising your seizure risk.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is based on anecdotal reports and reasoning, not strong studies, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Still, since thujone can be genuinely toxic, I'd play it safe and skip concentrated thuja while on amphetamine. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any thuja product.

What Is Amphetamine Used For?

Brand names: Dyanavel XR, Adensys XR-ODT, Mydayis, Adzenys ER

Amphetamine treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in patients 6 years and older. Adzenys XR-ODT, Dyanavel XR, and the amphetamine extended-release orally disintegrating tablet formulations are specifically approved for ADHD in this age group.

Amphetamine Sulfate tablets and Evekeo (amphetamine sulfate tablets) are also approved for narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness) and as a short-term aid in a calorie-restricted weight-loss program for exogenous obesity (weight gain from external factors like overeating) in patients who have not responded to other approaches.
