SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS
Why this applies to Methotrexate
Methotrexate falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing thuja with methotrexate. The concern isn't about how your body breaks down or clears the drug. Instead, it comes down to thujone, a compound in thuja oil and leaf that can act as a neurotoxin and may lower the threshold for seizures. Methotrexate is listed among drugs that can also nudge that seizure threshold down, so taking both together could, in theory, raise your seizure risk a bit more.
I want to be straight with you though: this is based on anecdotal evidence and theory, not strong studies. Still, since concentrated thuja products can carry real amounts of thujone, the safest move is to avoid them while on methotrexate. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any thuja product.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methotrexate page
“The liver is where methotrexate and supplements clash most. Methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Otrexup, Rasuvo), used for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and certain cancers, can strain the liver on its own, and 38 of the 82 interacting ingredients on this list add liver risk of their own, alcohol included, which makes this a list to approach…”

About Thuja
What is Thuja?
- Warts and skin growths
- Respiratory and immune support
- Cold and upper respiratory symptoms
- Topical skin conditions
- Traditional use as a diuretic or to bring on menstruation
Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Methotrexate
What Is Methotrexate Used For?
Brand names: Rheumatrex, Otrexup, Rasuvo, Reditrex
Methotrexate treats a wide range of serious conditions. In cancer care, it is used for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, osteosarcoma, breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (a rare tumor related to pregnancy). It is also used to prevent and treat meningeal leukemia (cancer affecting the lining of the brain and spinal cord).
Outside of cancer, methotrexate is prescribed for adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), children with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (a form of childhood arthritis), and adults with severe psoriasis that hasn't responded well to other treatments.

Methotrexate Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Methotrexate as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Thuja — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
