Duloxetine falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the simple version: Thuja, especially the oil, contains a compound called thujone, which can irritate the nervous system and may make seizures more likely. Duloxetine (Cymbalta) is one of many antidepressants that can slightly lower your seizure threshold on its own. Put the two together and, at least in theory, you could nudge that risk a little higher. This isn't about duloxetine being changed in your body, it's about both things pushing in the same direction.

I'll be honest, the evidence here is thin and mostly anecdotal, so I don't want to scare you. Food or homeopathic amounts are unlikely to matter much, but concentrated thuja oil is the real concern. Before trying any thuja product, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Duloxetine Used For?

Duloxetine delayed-release capsules treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults. They also manage diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (nerve pain from diabetes), fibromyalgia, and chronic musculoskeletal pain (such as chronic low back pain and pain from osteoarthritis) in adults.

GAD is also approved in pediatric patients 7 years and older for Cymbalta, Drizalma Sprinkle, and certain duloxetine delayed-release capsule products. Fibromyalgia is approved in patients 13 years and older for Cymbalta and some duloxetine delayed-release capsule products. Age-specific approvals vary by product — follow your prescriber's guidance on which product is right for your age group.
