Here's the concern with pairing Thuja and Topiramate. Thuja products can contain a compound called thujone, and in higher amounts thujone may lower the seizure threshold, meaning it could make the brain a little more prone to seizures. Since you take Topiramate to keep seizures (or migraines) under control, anything that nudges in the opposite direction could, in theory, work against it and make a breakthrough seizure more likely.

I'll be honest: this is based on anecdotal, theoretical reasoning, not solid human studies, so I don't want to alarm you. Topiramate isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about blood levels changing. Still, with a seizure medication I lean cautious. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using Thuja rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. What Is Topiramate Used For?

Brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia

  • Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures including primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (formerly known as a grand mal seizure; seizure that involves the entire body) and partial onset seizures (seizures that involve only one part of the brain). Topiramate is also used with other medications to control seizures in people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches but not to relieve the pain of migraine headaches when they occur. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
