Doxycycline Hyclate falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the deal with mixing thuja and your doxycycline. Thuja products can carry thujone, a compound that in higher amounts may act as a nerve toxin and could nudge your brain closer to a seizure. Some antibiotics, doxycycline included, are listed as drugs that can slightly lower the seizure threshold themselves. So in theory, stacking the two together might make a seizure a touch more likely.

I want to be honest with you: this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not solid studies, so for most people it's a small, mostly theoretical concern. Still, to play it safe, I'd skip concentrated thuja oil or supplements while you're on doxycycline. Have a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. What Is Doxycycline Used For?

Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.

In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
