Foscarnet falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with pairing Thuja and Foscarnet. Foscarnet on its own can irritate the nervous system and is known to occasionally trigger seizures, partly because it can throw off your calcium and electrolyte levels. Thuja products can contain thujone, a compound that's toxic to nerves and may make the brain more prone to seizures. Put them together and you could, in theory, raise that seizure risk a bit higher.

I'll be straight with you: this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not solid studies, so it's more of a caution than a proven danger. Still, since Foscarnet already carries seizure risk, I'd skip thuja supplements and check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Foscarnet Injection

What Is Foscarnet Injection Used For?

Brand name: Foscavir

Foscavir (foscarnet sodium injection) is approved to treat CMV retinitis — a viral eye infection — in patients with AIDS. It can also be used in combination with ganciclovir for CMV retinitis that has come back after treatment with either drug alone.

Foscavir is also approved to treat acyclovir-resistant mucocutaneous HSV infections — herpes sores on the skin or mucous membranes that no longer respond to acyclovir — in immunocompromised patients. It is approved only for immunocompromised individuals and has not been proven safe or effective for other CMV or HSV infections, or for people with healthy immune systems.
