Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs in one direction: your felodipine (Plendil) could blunt how well the thyroid extract is absorbed, not the other way around. When you take other pills at the same time as a thyroid product, they can bind to the thyroid hormone in your gut and keep some of it from getting into your bloodstream. The good news is this is rated minor and is easy to manage with timing.

Felodipine itself is not a prodrug, and its blood-pressure-lowering effect (and side effects like flushing, ankle swelling, or dizziness) shouldn't change much from this. To stay safe, separate them by a few hours and take the thyroid product on an empty stomach. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract is unpredictable, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before relying on it.
