Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern flows in the other direction from what you might expect. Your blood pressure pill, Zestoretic (lisinopril with hydrochlorothiazide), is not what gets blocked. Instead, taking it at the same time as thyroid extract can slightly reduce how well your body soaks up the thyroid hormone. The fix is simple timing: thyroid products are best taken on an empty stomach, and your other medicines are usually fine an hour or so later.

The bigger point worth raising is that thyroid extract itself can nudge blood pressure and heart rate up, which can work against the very thing your lisinopril and water pill are doing. If you notice a racing heart, jitteriness, or blood pressure readings that creep up, loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Zestoretic, Prinzide

Lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets — sold as the brand Zestoretic and as the generic combination — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack.

This is a fixed-dose combination product and is not intended as a first-line (initial) treatment for high blood pressure. It is typically prescribed for patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled on a single medication alone.
