Thyroid Extract and Ibrexafungerp Citrate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Oral Drugs

Why this applies to Ibrexafungerp Citrate

Ibrexafungerp Citrate falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.
Severity Minor Likelihood Likely Evidence A

Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this interaction is really about your thyroid extract, not about your ibrexafungerp (Brexafemme). Thyroid hormones from the extract absorb best on an empty stomach, and taking other oral pills, foods, or minerals nearby can bind them and lower how much gets into your body. So the concern is that ibrexafungerp could blunt your thyroid absorption if you swallow them at the same moment.

The good news is that ibrexafungerp itself is a short course for a yeast infection, and it is not a prodrug that the thyroid affects. To stay safe, just separate them in time. A common approach is taking thyroid extract first thing in the morning, then waiting before other pills. Your pharmacist can confirm the best spacing for you.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ibrexafungerp Citrate page

“Ibrexafungerp (Brexafemme) treats vaginal yeast infections, often in a single day of pills, and even that short course can be thrown off by the wrong supplement, so this list warrants real care. Three of the 138 ingredients on file rate major, and they pull in opposite directions.”

About Thyroid Extract

What is Thyroid Extract?

Thyroid Extract
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Weight management
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • General thyroid support

Thyroid extract supplements are made from dried animal thyroid gland and may contain real thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), but the amounts in over-the-counter products are not standardized and can be unpredictable. Self-treating a thyroid problem with these supplements can be risky, so always work with a doctor or pharmacist and use prescription thyroid medicine when treatment is needed.
