Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs in one direction: taking your paroxetine at the same time as a thyroid extract could lower how much of the thyroid hormone your body absorbs. Paroxetine isn't a prodrug, and it doesn't gain or lose strength from this. The thyroid product is the one that may not absorb as well when other pills are in your stomach at the same time.

This is a minor, well-documented timing issue, not a dangerous reaction. The simple fix is spacing: thyroid products absorb best on an empty stomach, so taking them well apart from paroxetine helps. Ask your pharmacist to confirm the best schedule, and remember that real thyroid problems should be managed with a doctor and standardized prescription medicine, not unpredictable extracts.

What Is Paroxetine Used For?

Brand names: Paxil CR, Paxil, Brisdelle

Paroxetine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspensions are approved in adults for major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The extended-release tablet forms (Paxil CR, paroxetine HCL CR, and paroxetine extended-release tablets) are approved in adults for MDD, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Brisdelle (paroxetine 7.5 mg capsule) and generic paroxetine capsules are approved specifically for moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) associated with menopause — not for any psychiatric condition. Paroxetine tablets are not approved for use in children.
