ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Empagliflozin, Metformin Hydrochloride
Empagliflozin, Metformin Hydrochloride falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: Tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. When you swallow it close to your Synjardy XR (empagliflozin plus metformin), that gel could theoretically trap part of the tablet and change how much gets absorbed. The honest truth is we don't know which way it would go, and this concern is based on how the fiber behaves, not on real studies in people taking these two together.
If absorption dropped, your blood sugar might run higher than expected. To stay on the safe side, it's smart to space them out: take your Synjardy first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. Don't change your diabetes medicine on your own, but do run this by your pharmacist or doctor.
