Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is basically a gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it, it swells into a thick, slippery gel in your stomach and gut. That gel can grab onto whatever else is in there, including your meclizine (Bonine), and either slow down or change how much of it your body soaks up. This isn't a chemical or enzyme issue, it's a physical one, and it's only a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves.

If absorption drops, meclizine might not work as well, so you could still feel motion-sick or dizzy. The easy fix is timing. Take your meclizine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth supplement. Food amounts usually aren't a worry. If you take a concentrated supplement regularly, just run it by your pharmacist.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Meclizine Used For?

Meclizine is used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness. This use is supported across many meclizine products, including Bonine, Bonine Max, Dramamine, Dramamine Less Drowsy, Dramamine-N, Naus-ease, CVS Motion Sickness Fast Melting, and Wal-Dram 2 Quick-Dissolving, among others.

Prescription-strength meclizine hydrochloride tablets are also indicated for treating vertigo — a spinning sensation — associated with diseases that affect the vestibular system (the inner ear balance system) in adults. Naus-ease film strips and tablets also list vertigo treatment as an indication.
