Here's the gist with valsartan (Diovan) and tragacanth. Tragacanth is a thick, gel-forming fiber gum. When you take it close to a swallowed pill, that gel can grab onto the medicine in your gut and change how much actually gets absorbed. With valsartan, this could in theory mean a little less of it gets into your bloodstream, which might soften its blood pressure lowering effect. In some cases absorption could go the other way too, so it's really about timing.

The good news: this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not strong human studies, and valsartan isn't a prodrug. To stay safe, a simple fix is to take tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes after your valsartan. If you watch your blood pressure at home and notice changes, loop in your pharmacist or doctor.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and to lower the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have reduced heart function. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (generic) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
