Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with meloxicam and tragacanth. This plant gum swells into a thick, slippery gel when it hits fluid in your stomach. That gel can physically grab onto a pill that's sitting nearby and change how much of it your body soaks up. With meloxicam, the worry is mostly the opposite directions: it could blunt absorption (less pain and stiffness relief) or, less predictably, shift it upward.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not from real cases with meloxicam, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The simple fix is timing. Take your meloxicam first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. If you have questions, your pharmacist can help you sort it out.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Meloxicam

What Is Meloxicam Used For?

Brand names: Mobic, Vivlodex, Qmiiz ODT, Anjeso

Meloxicam tablets and oral suspension treat the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). The oral suspension and Zybic™ oral suspension are approved for JRA in children 2 years and older; meloxicam tablets are approved for JRA in patients who weigh at least 60 kg. Meloxicam capsules are approved specifically for the management of osteoarthritis pain.

Two IV (intravenous) formulations — QAMZOVA and XIFYRM — are indicated for adults for the management of moderate-to-severe pain, used alone or with non-NSAID pain relievers. Because these IV forms take time to reach full effect, they are not recommended when rapid pain relief is needed.
