Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it close to a pill, that slippery gel can sometimes get in the way of how your body absorbs the medicine. With olmesartan (Benicar), your blood pressure pill, this could in theory mean a little less gets absorbed, which might soften its blood pressure lowering effect, or in some cases shift it the other way.

I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical, based on how the fiber behaves, not on real cases with olmesartan. A practical fix is to space them out, taking tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes after your olmesartan. If you notice your blood pressure creeping up, check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. What Is Olmesartan Used For?

Brand names: Olmesartan Medoxomil, Benicar

Olmesartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children aged 6 years and older. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack.

It is available as Benicar and as generic olmesartan medoxomil tablets, including a combination tablet with hydrochlorothiazide. All of these products are used for high blood pressure.
