Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with pitavastatin and tragacanth: this plant gum swells into a thick, slippery gel in your stomach. That gel can physically grab onto a pill and slow down or change how much of it your body soaks up. With a cholesterol drug like pitavastatin, the worry is mostly about getting less of the medicine into your bloodstream, which could mean your LDL ('bad cholesterol') isn't lowered as well as expected.

Keep in mind this is only a theoretical concern based on how fiber gums behave, not something proven with pitavastatin specifically, so there's no need to panic. A simple fix is to space them out: take your pitavastatin first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. If you use it regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Pitavastatin

What Is Pitavastatin Used For?

Brand names: Zypitamag, Nikita

Pitavastatin tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to reduce LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein, or "bad" cholesterol) in adults with primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol not caused by another disease).

Livalo, Pitavastatin Calcium (tablet), and some other pitavastatin tablet products are also approved for adults and children aged 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) — an inherited condition that causes very high LDL-C from birth. Zypitamag is labeled only for adults with primary hyperlipidemia; its labeling does not include the pediatric HeFH indication.
