Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the deal with combining tragacanth and your vandetanib (Caprelsa). Tragacanth is basically a gummy fiber that swells into a gel when it meets fluid in your stomach. That gel can grab onto pills you swallow and slow down or change how much of the drug actually gets absorbed. With vandetanib, that could in theory mean you absorb a little less (weaker cancer-fighting effect) or a little more (more side effects like diarrhea, high blood pressure, rash, or QT-related heart rhythm changes).

Now, this is a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not something proven with vandetanib specifically. Since vandetanib is a serious cancer medicine where steady levels matter, the simple fix is spacing them out: take your vandetanib first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. Please run this by your oncology team or pharmacist before adding it.

Caprelsa (vandetanib) is used to treat medullary thyroid cancer — a type of thyroid cancer — in adults whose tumor cannot be surgically removed or has spread (locally advanced or metastatic disease) and is causing symptoms or actively growing.

Caprelsa should be used with extra caution in patients whose cancer is slow-growing and not causing symptoms, because the serious risks of the medicine must be carefully weighed against any potential benefit in that setting.
