Daunorubicin, Cytarabine falls under ANTITUMOR ANTIBIOTICS — the group Vitamin C interacts with.

Theoretically, the antioxidant effects of vitamin C might reduce the effectiveness of antitumor antibiotics.
The use of antioxidants like vitamin C during chemotherapy is controversial. There is concern that antioxidants could reduce the activity of chemotherapy drugs which generate free radicals, such as doxorubicin. In contrast, some researchers theorize that antioxidants might make chemotherapy more effective by reducing oxidative stress that could interfere with apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells. More evidence is needed to determine what effects, if any, antioxidants such as vitamin C have on chemotherapy.

Here's the thinking behind this one. Part of Vyxeos, the daunorubicin component, is an anthracycline that's believed to fight leukemia cells partly by generating free radicals (unstable molecules that damage the cancer cells). Since vitamin C is an antioxidant that mops up free radicals, the worry is that loading up on high-dose vitamin C could blunt how well the chemo works. That's the concern flagged here.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is a theoretical idea based on how these drugs work, not proven harm, and the science actually goes both ways. The amount of vitamin C in a normal diet or a multivitamin is very unlikely to be an issue. Because Vyxeos is serious treatment for a serious illness, please don't start or stop any vitamin C supplement on your own. Just run it by your oncology team or pharmacist first.

  • Daunorubicin and cytarabine lipid complex is used to treat certain types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) in adults and children 1 year of age and older. Daunorubicin is in a class of medications called anthracyclines. Cytarabine is in a class of medications called antimetabolites. Daunorubicin and cytarabine lipid complex slows or stops the growth of cancer cells in your body.
