Wheatgrass and Oestrogen

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Oestrogen

Oestrogen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Wheatgrass interacts with.

Theoretically, wheatgrass might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that wheatgrass induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic idea with wheatgrass and estrogen. Your body partly clears estrogen using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Some early lab research suggests wheatgrass may speed that enzyme up. If that holds true in people, it could mean a bit more of your estrogen gets broken down, leaving slightly lower levels working in your body.

In practice, that might show up as estrogen feeling a little less effective, think more hot flashes, spotting, or breakthrough symptoms. I want to be straight with you though: this is only theoretical and comes from test tube studies, not real patients. Casual amounts in juice or smoothies are unlikely to matter much. Before adding concentrated wheatgrass powder, just run it by your doctor or pharmacist.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Oestrogen page

“Anyone taking oestrogen should read this page with real care, because the most serious entries can quietly push hormone levels up or wipe them out. Grapefruit blocks the liver enzyme that clears estrogen, raising levels and the risk of side effects, while St.”

About Wheatgrass

What is Wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass
  • General nutrition support
  • Digestive health
  • Antioxidant support
  • Energy and wellness
  • Arthritis symptoms
  • Detox or cleansing routines

Wheatgrass is the young grass of the wheat plant, taken as a juice or powder, and is mainly used as a concentrated source of vitamins and plant nutrients. Solid scientific evidence for most health claims is limited, and it is best viewed as a nutritional add-on rather than a treatment. It is generally well tolerated, but people with celiac disease, wheat allergy, or who are pregnant should be cautious and check with a healthcare provider.
