Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Wheatgrass interacts with.

Theoretically, wheatgrass might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that wheatgrass induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Here's the gist for riluzole (Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan). Your body clears this medicine mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab studies suggest wheatgrass may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could clear riluzole a little faster, which might lower its levels and make it work less well for your ALS. Riluzole isn't a prodrug, so faster clearance means less effect, not more.

The honest part: this is only seen in test-tube research, not in people, so we really don't know if it matters at usual food or supplement amounts. I wouldn't panic. Just loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding wheatgrass so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
