Drug & supplement interaction

White Mulberry + Meprobamate

Meprobamate brand names: Equanil, Miltown, Meprospan, Neuramate.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between White Mulberry and Meprobamate in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

White Mulberry and Meprobamate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Meprobamate and White Mulberry in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Pharmacist analysis

White mulberry is not known to have many clinically significant drug interactions.

While our drug-herb interaction checker does list potential interactions with antidiabetic drugs and drugs that are affected by a protein known as OCT2, it is generally thought these are clinically insignificant for most individuals as they are theoretical and have not been seen in humans.

Nevertheless, it is important to be cautious if you take any drug that our tool shows an interaction for.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Meprobamate

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Meprobamate is filed under 3 classifications — glucuronidated drugs, cns depressants, oral drugs. White Mulberry has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) and organic cation transporter 2 (oct2) substrates (moderate) — and none of Meprobamate’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests White Mulberry and Meprobamate May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

“Orally, white mulberry leaf powder 4.6 grams three times daily for 4 weeks was associated with bloating and flatulence in 50% of patients, loose stools in 25% of patients, and constipation in 21% of patients in one clinical study. However, reports of these adverse effects decreased over the course of the 12-week study, suggesting that for some patients the adverse effects may be transient in nature.”

About White Mulberry

What is White Mulberry?

White Mulberry
  • Blood sugar support
  • High cholesterol
  • Weight management
  • Antioxidant support
  • High blood pressure (traditional use)

White mulberry leaf is most studied for helping blunt the rise in blood sugar after meals, but the human evidence is limited and not strong. It is generally well tolerated as a food and tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements, especially if you take diabetes medicine.

Morus alba · Moraceae · Leaves, fruit (berries), root bark, and twigs · Capsules, tablets, leaf tea, powdered leaf extract, dried fruit, liquid extracts

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether White Mulberry is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our White Mulberry record says about it on its own.

White Mulberry: dosing

There is no officially established standard dose for white mulberry supplements. Doses used in studies have varied widely depending on the plant part and extract, and there is not enough consistent research to recommend a specific milligram amount. If you choose to use it, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the suggested amount.

About Meprobamate

What Is Meprobamate Used For?

Brand names: Equanil, Miltown, Meprospan, Neuramate

Meprobamate tablets are used to manage anxiety disorders or to provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. It is intended for anxiety that rises to the level of a disorder — everyday stress and tension that most people experience generally do not require this type of medication.

Because its effectiveness beyond four months has not been well studied, meprobamate is typically used for a limited period of time, with a prescriber checking in regularly to decide whether continued use is still appropriate.
