Zileuton falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Zedoary interacts with.

Theoretically, zedoary might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.

Here's the idea with zedoary and Zileuton. Your body partly uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break Zileuton down. In lab dishes, certain zedoary extracts seem to slow that enzyme. If that happened in real life, Zileuton could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might nudge up its usual side effects, things like nausea, upset stomach, headache, or changes in liver blood tests.

I want to be honest, though: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, not real cases in people. Everyday culinary amounts used as a spice are very unlikely to matter, while concentrated supplement doses are the bigger unknown. Don't change your Zileuton on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding a zedoary supplement.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
