Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are both possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); L. acidophilus is also possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea and bacterial vaginosis, while B. bifidum is possibly effective for respiratory tract infections.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most of these Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects — bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea — are uncommon but have been reported, especially when probiotics are combined.
Because these are live organisms, there's a theoretical concern about infection in people with severely weakened immune systems or serious underlying illness; the data note rare cases of bacteremia and sepsis in critically ill patients. Pregnancy safety is rated possibly safe for L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, and B. longum; data on L. gasseri and B. breve in pregnancy and lactation aren't on file.

L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum UABb-10
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
