Acidophilus ProBiotic-4 Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by KAL
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Acidophilus ProBiotic-4 against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Acidophilus ProBiotic-4 by KAL
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Acidophilus ProBiotic-4 contains 4 active probiotic ingredients: L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, S. thermophilus, and L. bulgaricus. These are live microorganisms meant to support gut bacteria balance.
The product also contains inactive ingredients — cellulose, maltodextrin, and stearic acid — which are fillers and binders used to form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product is mixed. L. acidophilus and B. bifidum are both rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea — so if you're taking antibiotics and worried about loose stools, there's some research backing these two.
L. acidophilus is also possibly effective for bacterial vaginosis. For most other conditions listed — allergic rhinitis, Alzheimer disease, anxiety, constipation, and diabetes — the evidence for one or more of these ingredients is insufficient to know whether they work.
S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus have no established effectiveness ratings in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
All four ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Live probiotic preparations carry a small theoretical risk: in rare cases, these organisms have caused serious infections (bloodstream infections, sepsis, abscess) in people with very weak immune systems or critical illness.
Healthy people with normal immune function appear to be at very low risk. Gastrointestinal side effects — bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea — can occur but are uncommon.
One clinical trial reported mild rashes in a small number of participants taking a multi-strain probiotic, though it's unclear whether the probiotics or other factors were responsible. No pregnancy or breastfeeding safety data is on file for any ingredient in this product; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start Acidophilus ProBiotic-4, double-check your antibiotic medications using the tool on this page. The three probiotic strains L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, and L. bulgaricus can be inactivated if you take them at the same time as antibiotics — so spacing matters.
No other medication types are documented to interact with the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help if you have IBS or are dealing with antibiotic-associated diarrhea, though the evidence is not conclusive. The main thing to watch is timing: if you're on antibiotics, space out when you take them and this supplement so the medicine doesn't kill the live organisms.
If you have a weakened immune system or are very ill, talk to your doctor first. For any questions about your specific health or medications, check with your pharmacist.

Acidophilus ProBiotic-4 by KAL Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Acidophilus ProBiotic-4 by KAL contains four live probiotic strains, three of which interact with antibiotic drugs.
The most serious documented interaction is Moderate in severity: taking this product at the same time as antibiotics might reduce how well the probiotics work, because antibiotics can kill the live organisms in the supplement. The three strains affected are L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, and L. bulgaricus — all via the same mechanism.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Additionally, no interactions are documented for S. thermophilus, one of the four active ingredients in this product.
Additionally, the three affected ingredients interact only with antibiotic drugs in our data. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
If you take any antibiotics, run them through the medication checker below before you start this supplement — timing matters here, and we can help you figure out the right spacing.

L. acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.

B. bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
L. bulgaricus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
