What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 4 active ingredients.
  • “A Proprietary Probiotic Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (69 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

UP4 Adult is a 4-ingredient probiotic capsule. The active ingredients are four beneficial bacteria: Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, Bifidobacterium longum UABl-14, Bifidobacterium bifidum UABb-10, and Bifidobacterium lactis UABla-12.

These are live organisms meant to support your gut health. The inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose (the capsule), fructooligosaccharides (a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria), and silica — are just there to hold the product together and keep it stable.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Digestive and immune support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Bacterial vaginosis, Colic, Constipation, Diarrhea, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Bacterial vaginosis, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Bifidobacterium Bifidum is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The evidence for these probiotics varies by condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Helicobacter pylori infection, and bacterial vaginosis.

Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. Bifidobacterium longum hasn't shown reliable evidence for any particular condition we checked — the data we hold rates it as insufficient.

The other conditions listed (anxiety, asthma, hay fever, cognitive decline) either lack solid evidence or showed the probiotics were possibly ineffective.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 3 of the 3 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 3 of 3.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 3 of 3.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, the safety data are limited, so check with your doctor before starting, especially if you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, or pregnant.

The live organisms in probiotics carry a theoretical risk: in very rare cases, they've caused serious infections like bacteremia or sepsis in critically ill or vulnerable patients — but these cases are uncommon. Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, or diarrhea can happen, but they're uncommon.

Pregnancy is rated possibly safe; lactation data aren't available for all ingredients, so ask your pharmacist or doctor.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 3 of the 3 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Bifidum, Bifidobacterium Longum.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 182 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Double-check antibiotic drugs before taking this product — all three checked probiotics may lose effectiveness if dosed at the same time. Space them at least a couple of hours apart.

No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.

Adult by UP4: Common Questions

Does Adult by UP4 interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Adult has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Adult contains 4 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this with my antibiotics?
Not at the same time. All the probiotics in here can be killed by antibiotics, which would defeat the purpose. Take your antibiotic and this product at least a couple of hours apart — your doctor or pharmacist can help you plan the timing.
Is it safe if I'm pregnant?
Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are both rated possibly safe in pregnancy. We don't have enough data on Bifidobacterium longum in pregnancy. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you right now.
Will this help my IBS?
Two of the probiotics in here — Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum — are possibly effective for IBS. That means the evidence suggests they may help, but it's not ironclad. Results vary from person to person.
What are the side effects?
Most people tolerate it fine. Mild gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, or loose stool can happen, but it's uncommon. In very rare cases, serious infections have occurred in critically ill patients, but that's not a typical risk for healthy people.
Do I need to refrigerate it?
The product facts don't cover storage, so check the label or call the manufacturer for the best way to keep these live organisms stable.
What's fructooligosaccharides doing in there?
It's a prebiotic fiber — basically food for the beneficial bacteria in the capsule. It helps them thrive once they reach your gut.
