Alfalfa leaf is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but as a supplement it carries real risks. The most common side effects are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, gas, and bloating, especially in the first week.

Dermatitis (skin inflammation) has been reported after chronic use. Rarely, chronic ingestion has been linked to a lupus-like syndrome.

Animal research suggests that alfalfa decreases blood sugar in diabetic mice. Also, in one case report, a diabetic patient experienced hypoglycemia after consuming alfalfa extract. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
