What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: astaxanthin 5 mg per softgel capsule. Astaxanthin is a pigment found naturally in certain marine organisms and algae.
The capsule itself is made with inactive ingredients — sunflower seed oil, gelatin, and vegetable glycerin — which help deliver the astaxanthin and give the softgel its form.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on astaxanthin's effectiveness is insufficient to rate it for the conditions it's marketed for — age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (eye disease related to aging), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome. That means the research available doesn't yet support a clear claim that it works for any of these.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — the red color is a harmless sign that the pigment passed through unabsorbed.
Most people in trials experienced no problems, but a small number reported increased bowel movements and red stools at the 6 mg dose, and at much higher doses (40 mg daily) severe stomach or abdominal pain has occurred in a few cases. There isn't enough safety data to know whether astaxanthin is safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Astaxanthin 5 mg, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether you take any drugs that are broken down by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6. These include a wide range of common medications — heart drugs, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressants, certain cancer drugs, and many others.
Astaxanthin may decrease how well these drugs work by speeding up how your liver clears them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is marketed for several aging-related and performance concerns, but the evidence we have doesn't yet support those claims. The bigger consideration is that it may slow your liver's clearance of a large number of medications.
If you take any prescription drugs or serious over-the-counter medications, check them against the interaction checker on this page or talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Astaxanthin 5 mg by Vitamin World Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 5 mg by Vitamin World may interact with a number of medications.
The main concern is with drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 — astaxanthin can theoretically speed up how your liver clears these drugs, which may make them less effective. This effect has been seen in lab studies but not yet confirmed in people.
The same applies to drugs metabolized by CYP3A4's cousin enzyme, CYP2B6.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because these two enzyme pathways handle a wide range of medications — from heart drugs and blood pressure medications to immunosuppressants, certain cancers drugs, and more — the list of potentially affected medications is substantial. Altogether, these interactions span 672 individual medications.
If you take any prescription or over-the-counter medication, run it through the checker below before starting astaxanthin. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether any of your specific drugs fall into these categories and whether timing or dosing adjustments make sense for you.
