Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains a single active ingredient: astaxanthin 5 mg per softgel capsule. Astaxanthin is a pigment found naturally in certain marine organisms and algae.

The capsule itself is made with inactive ingredients — sunflower seed oil, gelatin, and vegetable glycerin — which help deliver the astaxanthin and give the softgel its form.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Astaxanthin product and its label doesn't state a use — see Astaxanthin's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold on astaxanthin's effectiveness is insufficient to rate it for the conditions it's marketed for — age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (eye disease related to aging), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome. That means the research available doesn't yet support a clear claim that it works for any of these.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — the red color is a harmless sign that the pigment passed through unabsorbed.

Most people in trials experienced no problems, but a small number reported increased bowel movements and red stools at the 6 mg dose, and at much higher doses (40 mg daily) severe stomach or abdominal pain has occurred in a few cases. There isn't enough safety data to know whether astaxanthin is safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Astaxanthin.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 672 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking Astaxanthin 5 mg, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether you take any drugs that are broken down by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6. These include a wide range of common medications — heart drugs, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressants, certain cancer drugs, and many others.

Astaxanthin may decrease how well these drugs work by speeding up how your liver clears them.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Astaxanthin is marketed for several aging-related and performance concerns, but the evidence we have doesn't yet support those claims. The bigger consideration is that it may slow your liver's clearance of a large number of medications.

If you take any prescription drugs or serious over-the-counter medications, check them against the interaction checker on this page or talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Astaxanthin 5 mg by Vitamin World: Common Questions

Does Astaxanthin 5 mg by Vitamin World interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Astaxanthin 5 mg has a known interaction with 671 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Astaxanthin 5 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What exactly is astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin is a natural pigment found in marine organisms and algae. It gives some seafood and algae their red or pink color.
Will this help with my wrinkles or cognitive function?
The evidence we have isn't strong enough to say whether astaxanthin works for aging skin, memory, or cognitive decline. Studies haven't yet established clear benefit for any of those.
What are the side effects?
Most people tolerate it well. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — the red color is just the pigment passing through and isn't harmful. Higher doses have caused more severe stomach pain in a few cases.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to do either.
How do I know if this will interfere with my medications?
Use the interaction checker on this page with your specific drug names, or ask your pharmacist whether you take anything metabolized by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 — astaxanthin may make those drugs less effective.
