Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin (AstaPure), a red pigment found in algae and seafood. Astaxanthin is an antioxidant — a compound that may help protect your cells from damage.
The tablet or pill also contains inactive ingredients (FirmBond and Nutrapure) that help hold the pill together and deliver the astaxanthin.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that astaxanthin works for any of the uses it's marketed for — age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome all carry insufficient evidence ratings in our data. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research we have access to isn't strong enough to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — the red color is from the astaxanthin itself, not a sign of bleeding.
A small number of people in trials experienced increased bowel movements at lower doses, and two patients on a much higher dose reported severe stomach pain. There isn't enough safety data to know whether astaxanthin is safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether to use this product — the safety data advises against it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check whether you're on any medications metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes — astaxanthin may speed up how quickly your body breaks them down and reduce their effectiveness. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're curious about astaxanthin for an age-related or skin concern, it's generally well tolerated, but don't expect strong evidence that it'll work. The bigger question is your medications — run them through our checker first.
And if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your pharmacist before starting.

Organic Astaxanthin by Purity Labs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Purity Labs Organic Astaxanthin contains a single active ingredient, astaxanthin, which has documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is with drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme — astaxanthin may speed up how your body clears these medications, potentially lowering their levels and reducing how well they work. This is a moderate-severity interaction based on lab research, though it hasn't been confirmed in people yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically affects drugs metabolized by the CYP2B6 enzyme in a similar way — it may increase how quickly your liver processes them, which could decrease their effectiveness. Like the CYP3A4 interaction, this is rated moderate and remains theoretical in humans.
Because astaxanthin is checked against a large medication database, you'll want to run your exact prescription drugs through the interaction checker below before you start. Altogether, these interactions span 661 individual medications.
