Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 2 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains 2 active ingredients — bacopa monnieri (the whole plant) and bacopa monnieri herb extract. Both are forms of the same plant and work the same way in your body.

The supplement also includes three inactive ingredients: vegetable cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and calcium silicate, which form the capsule and help hold everything together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Bacopa product and its label doesn't state a use — see Bacopa's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for bacopa isn't established in the data we hold. It's been studied for Alzheimer disease, cognitive impairment, cognitive function, ADHD, back pain, and sexual dysfunction, but all of those conditions are rated Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate — meaning either the studies are too small, too short, or the results are mixed.

If you're considering bacopa for a specific reason, that's worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bacopa is generally well tolerated in studies, though quality and long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, and headache.

Between 12% and 30% of people in studies reported gastrointestinal upset. Some people have also reported drowsiness, insomnia, vivid dreams, bloating, and changes in appetite or thirst.

There isn't enough safety information to recommend bacopa during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Bacopa.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 931 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking bacopa, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any of these: cevimeline (Evoxac), medications broken down by your liver's CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, or CYP3A4 enzymes, anticholinergic drugs (for muscle spasms or overactive bladder), cholinergic drugs (for myasthenia gravis), or thyroid hormone replacement. All of these have documented interactions, with the cevimeline interaction being the most serious.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Bacopa 500 mg may interest you if you're exploring herbal options for memory or focus, but the evidence for how well it actually works isn't established. The bigger concern is that it interacts with a large number of medications through how your liver processes them, and specifically with cevimeline and other drugs that affect nerve-muscle function.

Before you start, check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist.

Anticholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cevimeline (Evoxac)

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the effects and adverse effects of cevimeline.
In one case, a 58-year-old female taking cevimeline long-term for Sjogren syndrome experienced hyperhidrosis, malaise, nausea, and tachycardia shortly after taking a single dose of bacopa. Symptoms resolved after two days. Cevimeline is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 and CYP3A4, and researchers theorize that bacopa may have inhibited these isoenzymes. However, it is unclear if bacopa causes clinically significant inhibition of either CYP2D6 or CYP3A4.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use of bacopa with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. Theoretically, this could result in additive cholinergic effects when used with cholinergic drugs.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C19 enzymes. It is not known whether this is clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Thyroid Hormone

Theoretically, bacopa might have additive effects when used with thyroid hormone.
Animal research suggests that bacopa increases thyroxine (T4) levels in mice by about 40%.

Bacopa 500 mg by Nature's Answer: Common Questions

Does Bacopa 500 mg by Nature's Answer interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Bacopa 500 mg has a known interaction with 930 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Bacopa 500 mg contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What exactly is bacopa?
Bacopa is an herb — Bacopa monnieri — that's used in traditional medicine. This product gives you the whole plant plus an extract of it in a single 500 mg capsule. It's been studied for memory and thinking, but we don't yet have solid evidence that it works for any condition.
Can I take bacopa if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety information to recommend it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're in either situation.
What side effects might I notice?
Most commonly, people report gastrointestinal issues — stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth — and headache. Between 12% and 30% of people in studies had some gastrointestinal upset. Some people also reported drowsiness, insomnia, or vivid dreams.
Does bacopa work for memory or ADHD?
The evidence isn't established in the data we hold. Bacopa has been studied for both, but the results so far aren't strong enough to say whether it really helps. If you're interested in trying it for a specific reason, talk it over with your doctor.
Why do I need to check my medications before taking this?
Bacopa may change how your liver breaks down a very large number of common medications, potentially raising their levels and side effects. It can also interfere with specific drugs like cevimeline and muscle-related medications. Your doctor or pharmacist can check your exact prescriptions against the interaction data here.
