Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: beet powder. Beet is a root vegetable — the whole powder is the active component, with no added fillers or inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for beet powder is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for athletic performance and for reducing exercise-induced muscle soreness based on available research.
However, the evidence isn't strong enough to rate its effect on cholesterol (dyslipidemia) or cognitive function, and it appears possibly ineffective for COPD symptoms.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beet as a food is widely eaten and generally well tolerated by adults. However, concentrated supplements like powder lack the safety data that whole food does, so the facts advise using caution with concentrated forms.
The most common side effects are harmless — red stools and red urine — which happen because of the beet's pigment passing through your body. Rarely, large amounts of beet have been linked to low blood calcium or kidney damage.
One case report described black stools after beet pills in a person on blood thinners, though an upper gastrointestinal bleed was ruled out. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the data on file doesn't cover these situations — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any medications your liver processes before taking this beet powder. The biggest concern is CYP3A4 substrates — a very large group that includes many heart, blood pressure, psychiatric, and immunosuppressant drugs — where beet may raise medication levels (Moderate severity).
Also double-check blood pressure medications, since beet contains nitrates that can lower blood pressure (Minor severity), and CYP1A2 substrates, where beet may decrease effectiveness (Minor severity).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Beet root powder may support athletic performance and muscle recovery, but its interactions with liver-processed medications are a real consideration before you start it. If you take prescription drugs — especially heart, blood pressure, or psychiatric medications — check them against this product first.
Talk with your pharmacist if you're unsure whether it's appropriate for you.

Beet, Powder monograph & interactionsBeet Root Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
TerraVita Premium Collection Beet Root Powder contains one active ingredient — beet powder — which interacts with a significant number of medications.
The most serious concern is with CYP3A4 substrates (a large group of drugs your liver processes via a specific enzyme). Lab studies suggest betanin, beet's main pigment, may inhibit this enzyme in a dose-dependent way, potentially raising levels of these medications in your bloodstream.
Altogether, these interactions span 850 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beet also theoretically affects CYP1A2 substrates — drugs processed by a different liver enzyme — by reducing their levels, though the clinical importance is less clear. Additionally, the nitrates in beet can lower blood pressure, which is a concern if you're already taking blood pressure medications, though one clinical study found no significant effect from concentrated beetroot juice.
Because the interaction data is based on lab research rather than human trials, the real-world impact is uncertain. Before starting this supplement, use the medication checker on this page to look up any prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications you take.

For each ingredient in Beet Root Powder with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Beet, Powder
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, the major pigment in beet, competitively inhibits CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner similarly to strong CYP3A4 inhibitor ketoconazole.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Beet and beetroot contain nitrates, which can cause vasodilation, potentially leading to lower blood pressure. However, a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition using concentrated beetroot juice found no significant impact on blood pressure or heart rate in different age groups. Other small clinical studies suggest that while beet consumption might transiently lower blood pressure due to vessel dilation, there's no consistent evidence of a lasting effect. Overall, the theoretical risk of reduced blood pressure due to beet's nitrate content exists, but studies generally indicate a low and temporary impact rather than a sustained decrease.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that beet induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
