Beta-glucan from food sources is generally well tolerated by most people. However, concentrated supplements have less safety data than whole foods, so caution is advised when using higher doses.
Topical beta-glucan products have caused mild, self-limiting skin reactions and contact dermatitis in some users. In rare cases, very high oral doses (120 mg per kilogram of body weight daily, used in a pediatric cancer trial) triggered temporary liver enzyme elevations in one participant.
