Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • “Turkey Tail Mushroom Extract” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (1,000 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

This product contains one active ingredient: beta-1,3-1,6-glucan, a type of polysaccharide (a chain of sugars) extracted from turkey tail mushrooms. Turkey tail has been studied for its effects on cholesterol, heart health, and immune function.

The powder contains no added inactive ingredients — it's just the extracted glucan.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Beta-glucans's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Immune support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Allergic rhinitis (hay fever), Atopic dermatitis (eczema), Cancer, Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Exercise-induced respiratory infections, Hepatitis — and 4 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Beta-glucans is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Beta-glucans is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Cancer, Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Atopic dermatitis (eczema), and more.

The beta-glucan in this powder is rated likely effective for two conditions: dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol and fat levels in the blood) and coronary heart disease (CHD). That means clinical evidence supports its use for these purposes, though it's not a cure or replacement for prescription medications.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Beta-glucans from food sources are generally well tolerated, but this is a concentrated supplement, and the safety data on supplement doses is limited. You may experience mild, temporary skin reactions if applied topically, though oral use has been well tolerated in most people.

On the rare side, one person in a clinical trial developed temporary liver enzyme elevations (a sign of liver stress) early on, so if you have liver disease or take liver-affecting medications, mention this to your doctor before starting. There isn't enough safety data on this supplement during breastfeeding, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor for personalized advice if you're nursing.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Beta-glucans.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: immunosuppressants / transplant drugs.
  • For scale: 293 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Double-check this powder before starting if you take blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) or immunosuppressants — both are rated Moderate severity. Beta-glucans might lower your pressure further or interfere with immune suppression, so your doctor may need to adjust doses or monitor you more closely.

Turkey Tail Mushroom Extract4 drug types · 187 drugs

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, taking turkey tail mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that turkey tail mushroom and a polysaccharide component can have hypoglycemic effects.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cyclophosphamide

Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might increase exposure to cyclophosphamide.
Some animal research shows that the PSP component of turkey tail mushroom can increase the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of cyclophosphamide by 44% to 50% and the half-life by 34% to 43%. This interaction could potentially increase the effects and adverse effects of cyclophosphamide. However, it is not known whether PSP affects the levels of the active metabolites of cyclophosphamide that are responsible for its clinical activity.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)

Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might interfere with the absorption of tamoxifen.
Animal research suggests that PSP increases the time to reach maximum concentration of a single dose of tamoxifen by about 9.5 hours, or 228%. When repeated doses of tamoxifen were given, the time to reach maximum concentration was increased by about 5.6 hours, or 93%. However, PSP did not affect the maximum concentration or the area under the curve of tamoxifen.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might inhibit CYP2C9.
Laboratory research suggests that the PSP component of turkey tail mushroom dose-dependently inhibits CYP2C9. Theoretically, taking PSP with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 might increase drug levels and the risk of adverse effects. However, this has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Turkey Tail Powder by Real Mushrooms: Common Questions

Does Turkey Tail Powder by Real Mushrooms interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Turkey Tail Powder has a known interaction with 461 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Turkey Tail Powder contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does this actually help with high cholesterol or heart disease?
The beta-glucan in this powder is rated likely effective for both high cholesterol (dyslipidemia) and coronary heart disease, which means clinical studies support its use. It's not a replacement for your prescription medications, but it may help as part of your overall approach.
Are there any side effects I should know about?
Oral beta-glucans are generally well tolerated. The most common side effect reported in studies was mild skin reactions when applied topically. One person in a trial developed temporary elevations in liver enzymes, which resolved on their own — this is rare, but mention it to your doctor if you have liver concerns.
Is this safe if I'm on blood pressure medication?
That's the key interaction to watch. Beta-glucans can lower blood pressure, so taking them alongside your blood pressure medication might lower it more than intended. Check your exact medications with the tool on this page, and talk to your pharmacist before starting.
Can I take this while breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data on concentrated supplement doses during breastfeeding. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it's right for you while nursing.
What exactly is beta-1,3-1,6-glucan?
It's a type of polysaccharide — a chain of sugar molecules — extracted from turkey tail mushrooms. This particular structure is thought to be responsible for many of the health effects associated with turkey tail.
