Bio-DHEA Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Bio-DHEA against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Bio-DHEA contains a single active ingredient: dehydroepiandrosterone, a naturally occurring hormone your body produces. It's combined with inactive ingredients including dextrose, fruit sugar, vegetable lubricants, cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for DHEA varies by use. It's rated likely effective for vaginal atrophy — a thinning and drying of vaginal tissue.
For infertility and aging skin, the evidence is promising but not yet conclusive; these uses are rated possibly effective. It's also possibly effective for depression, though again the evidence isn't definitive.
The data we hold doesn't establish effectiveness for other uses you might see advertised.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
DHEA is generally well tolerated in typical doses over the short term, but because it's a hormone, it requires medical guidance — it can trigger hormonal side effects. The most common reported side effect is acne, particularly in women, though it's usually mild and may improve with a dose reduction.
Others include headache, insomnia, mood changes, nausea, increased hair growth, oily skin, and changes in voice or menstruation in females. There's also a report of mania linked to DHEA use.
Long-term use raises theoretical concerns about cancer risk, though this isn't proven. DHEA should not be used during pregnancy — the safety data advises against it.
While breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so avoid it then too. If you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before considering this supplement.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Bio-DHEA, double-check these medication types with your doctor or pharmacist: antidepressants (risk of psychiatric side effects or mania), blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (increased bleeding risk), cancer medications that block estrogen (aromatase inhibitors, tamoxifen, fulvestrant), and any drug metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4, especially triazolam. Also mention if you've had a recent tuberculosis vaccine.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Bio-DHEA may help with vaginal atrophy and possibly with infertility, depression, or aging skin, but it's a hormone and needs medical oversight. If you take antidepressants, blood thinners, cancer medications, or drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
It's not appropriate during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Bio-DHEA by MBi Nutraceuticals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bio-DHEA by MBi Nutraceuticals contains dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a hormone that interacts with a significant number of medications.
The most serious documented interaction is with antidepressants — DHEA can theoretically increase the risk of psychiatric side effects, and there's a case report of someone taking an SSRI with DHEA who had a manic episode. This concern may be higher in younger people.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
DHEA also affects how your body metabolizes certain drugs. It may slow the breakdown of medications processed through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which includes the sleep aid triazolam; it's been shown to raise blood levels of that drug.
Because of this, DHEA can theoretically raise levels of other drugs that use the same pathway. Additionally, DHEA may increase bleeding risk if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin — research shows DHEA can inhibit platelet clumping.
Because DHEA acts like estrogen in the body, it may interfere with cancer medications that work against estrogen, including aromatase inhibitors, tamoxifen, and fulvestrant. There's also theoretical concern about interaction with the tuberculosis vaccine.
Altogether, these interactions span 777 individual medications.
Before you start Bio-DHEA, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this supplement fits your regimen.

For each ingredient in Bio-DHEA with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Dehydroepiandrosterone
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHEA might increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Human and laboratory research show that DHEA and DHEA-S can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Antidepressant Drugs
Theoretically, DHEA might increase the risk of psychiatric adverse events when used with antidepressants.
In a human case report, the use of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with DHEA caused a manic episode. Concern for this interaction may be greater in younger individuals with higher baseline DHEA levels.
Aromatase Inhibitors
Theoretically, DHEA might interfere with the clinical effects of aromatase inhibitors.
DHEA is a potent estrogen agonist, which may antagonize the anti-estrogen activity of aromatase inhibitors.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, DHEA might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some preliminary evidence shows that DHEA may inhibit CYP3A4; however, the clinical significance of this potential interaction is not known.
Fulvestrant (Faslodex)
Theoretically, DHEA might interfere with the anti-estrogen effects of fulvestrant.
DHEA is a potent estrogen agonist. Some research shows that it can overcome the estrogen receptor antagonist action of fulvestrant in estrogen-receptor positive cancer cells.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, DHEA might interfere with the anti-estrogen effects of tamoxifen.
DHEA is a potent estrogen agonist. Some research shows that it can overcome the estrogen receptor antagonist activity of tamoxifen in estrogen-receptor positive cancer cells.
Triazolam (Halcion)
DHEA can increase blood levels of triazolam.
Administration of DHEA 200 mg daily for two weeks was shown to inhibit the cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) metabolism of triazolam. This inhibition appears to be due to DHEA-S, rather than DHEA.
Tuberculosis Vaccine
DHEA might reduce the effectiveness of the tuberculosis vaccine.
Animal research shows that high doses of DHEA can reduce the efficacy of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) tuberculosis vaccine.
Estrogens
Theoretically, DHEA might increase the effects and adverse effects of estrogen therapy.
DHEA is a precursor to estrogen and androgen and is metabolized into those substances. In clinical research, DHEA supplements increase the levels of these hormones. Also, in clinical research, estrogen-progestin oral contraceptives and conjugated estrogens reduce blood levels of DHEA and DHEA-S. The clinical significance of these findings is unclear.
Testosterone
Theoretically, DHEA might increase the effects and side effects of testosterone therapy.
DHEA is a precursor to estrogen and androgen and is metabolized into those substances. In clinical research, DHEA supplements increase the levels of these hormones. The clinical significance of these findings is unclear.
