What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • “Proprietary Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (0.50 mL) without saying how much of each component you get.

Chanca Piedra Herb is a liquid supplement containing one active ingredient: chanca piedra (a plant traditionally used in herbal practice). The formula also includes inactive ingredients—USP grade vegetable glycerin and purified water—which serve as the base and preservative for the liquid form.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: kidney and gallstone support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Gallbladder disease, Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis), Urinary tract infections (UTIs), Biliary colic, Renal calculi.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Chanca Piedra is rated "Possibly Effective" for Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Chanca Piedra is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Gallbladder disease, Urinary tract infections (UTIs), Colic.

Chanca piedra is possibly effective for kidney stones (nephrolithiasis). For other conditions, the evidence is less clear: it is rated likely ineffective for hepatitis B, and there is insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for anemia of chronic disease or benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

If you're considering this supplement for kidney stones, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it fits your overall care plan.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chanca piedra is often well tolerated in the short term, but good-quality safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported are abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

One clinical trial also noted fatigue in some users. The safety data advise against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding—there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe in either situation.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chanca Piedra.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications; lithium.
  • For scale: 1,021 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you use blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin), diuretics (water pills), lithium, norepinephrine (Levophed), antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), or antidiabetes drugs (insulin or oral diabetes medications). Additionally, if your medications are metabolized by your liver's CYP1A2 or CYP3A4 pathways—a list that includes many common drugs—you'll want to verify there's no conflict.

However, higher quality research in adults with kidney stones shows taking chanca piedra does not increase urine volume when compared with placebo. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking diuretic drugs.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Lithium

Theoretically, chanca piedra might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Some preliminary clinical research in adults with hypertension shows that chanca piedra has diuretic properties. However, higher quality research in adults with kidney stones shows that taking chanca piedra does not increase urine volume when compared with placebo. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Norepinephrine (Levophed)

Theoretically, chanca piedra may reduce the effects of norepinephrine.
Animal research suggests that methyl brevifolincarboxylate, a constituent isolated from chanca piedra, can reverse blood vessel contraction caused by norepinephrine.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use with antidiabetes drugs might affect glucose control and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that chanca piedra can have hypoglycemic effects. However, a small clinical study in adults with diabetes shows that chanca piedra extract 25 grams orally daily for 1 week does not lower fasting or postprandial blood glucose levels.

Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D
Antihypertensive Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with antihypertensive drugs might have additive blood pressure lowering effects.
