Chewable Probiotic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chewable Probiotic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chewable Probiotic by Protocol For Life Balance
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This chewable contains 10 active probiotic bacterial strains — live organisms meant to support your gut health. The checked strains include Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium breve, and Streptococcus thermophilus ST-21, along with six others we don't have detailed data on.
The product also contains inactive ingredients like xylitol, sorbitol, microcrystalline cellulose, and natural berry flavor to make it palatable as a chewable tablet.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For Lactobacillus acidophilus, the evidence supports possible effectiveness for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium breve, the evidence isn't established for most uses we have data on — the ratings are either insufficient evidence or possibly ineffective.
Streptococcus thermophilus has insufficient evidence for the conditions studied. Since we don't hold effectiveness data for the other six strains, we can't comment on their individual roles.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though rare gastrointestinal side effects have been reported — abdominal discomfort, flatulence, bloating, constipation, and in one case a dry cough. More serious complications (bacteremia, sepsis) are extremely rare and almost always occur in critically ill, hospitalized, or severely immunocompromised patients, not in otherwise healthy people.
If you're seriously ill, have a weakened immune system, or are in the hospital, talk with your doctor before using. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe; limited safety data exist for the other strains, so discuss with your healthcare provider first.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Separate this probiotic from antibiotic drugs by several hours — antibiotics can reduce the probiotic's effectiveness. Since we could not check six of the ten strains, ask your pharmacist to verify your full medication list against the ones we do have data for.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a multi-strain probiotic that may help with IBS and a few other gut-related conditions, especially via its Lactobacillus acidophilus content. If you're on antibiotics, space out your doses — the antibiotic can kill the live organisms.
If you're seriously ill, immunocompromised, or pregnant, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Bifidobacterium longum BL-5
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-14
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium breve BB-3
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
