Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • “Choline” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (235 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

This product contains one active ingredient: choline bitartrate, a form of choline that supports cell signaling and brain function. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, vegetable stearate, silica, magnesium silicate, and microcrystalline cellulose — which are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Choline product and its label doesn't state a use — see Choline's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for choline bitartrate is mixed. For athletic performance, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective.

For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, and a serious liver condition in people on nutritional support (TPN-associated hepatic steatosis), we don't have enough reliable evidence to know whether it works. Talk with your doctor about what you're hoping to treat to see if this supplement is the right fit.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Choline bitartrate is well tolerated at normal doses. High doses — above 3.5 grams daily — can cause side effects including fishy body odor (the most common), and at doses of 9 grams or more, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and sweating.

Choline is important during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, but use only the dose your doctor or midwife recommends — don't self-dose at high levels without professional guidance.

Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Choline.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 16 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take atropine (Minor severity), choline may theoretically reduce its effects. Check your complete medication list with your pharmacist or doctor before starting — we have documented data on 16 individual medications this ingredient can interact with.

Atropine

Theoretically, choline might decrease the effects of atropine in the brain.
Animal research shows that administering choline one hour before administering atropine can attenuate atropine-induced decreases in brain levels of acetylcholine. Theoretically, concomitant use of choline and atropine may decrease the effects of atropine.

Choline Bitartrate by Douglas Laboratories: Common Questions

Does Choline Bitartrate by Douglas Laboratories interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Choline Bitartrate has a known interaction with 16 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Choline Bitartrate contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Choline is important during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and this product is rated likely safe. However, don't self-dose — talk with your doctor or midwife about the right amount for your situation, since choline needs are higher while you're nursing.
What's the fishy smell I might get?
At higher doses, choline can produce a fishy body odor due to how your gut breaks it down. This is the most common side effect and usually goes away if you lower your dose or stop taking it.
How much can I safely take?
The daily upper limit is 3.5 grams. Above that, side effects become more likely — nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sweating have been reported at doses of 9 grams daily or higher. Stick to your product's recommended dose and talk to your pharmacist if you have questions.
Will this help my memory or brain function?
For age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. For athletic performance, the evidence suggests it's probably not effective. Your doctor can help you decide if it's worth trying for your specific needs.
What are the inactive ingredients?
The capsule contains hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, vegetable stearate, silica, magnesium silicate, and microcrystalline cellulose — these are fillers and binders that help form the capsule.
