Betaine hydrochloride may irritate your stomach and is not safe if you have ulcers, gastritis, or true acid reflux—it actually increases stomach acid, which can worsen those conditions. Papain is generally well tolerated as a food but supplements may irritate your digestive tract and cause allergic reactions in sensitive people.

High doses of papain are unsafe and can rarely cause severe gastritis or esophageal perforation. Both ingredients should be avoided in pregnancy.
