Elderberry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Elderberry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Elderberry by Mountain Meadow Herbs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This liquid contains 3 active ingredients. Elderberry extract is the main one, made from the ripe fruit of the elderberry plant.
Vegetable glycerin is included as a sweetener and preservative. The rest is distilled water.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence for elderberry in this product is not established. We hold no reliable data on how well it works for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), cardiovascular disease, chronic fatigue, COPD, cognitive function, or respiratory tract infections.
If you're considering it for one of these reasons, talk it over with your doctor to see if there's stronger evidence elsewhere or if another option might suit you better.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Properly prepared elderberry — like the extract in this liquid — is generally well tolerated. The main risks come from raw or unripe berries, seeds, leaves, or bark, which contain a toxin that cooking removes; since this is an extract, that risk is not present.
However, there is not enough reliable safety data, so the safety data advises against using elderberry supplements during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Vegetable glycerin at normal amounts is well tolerated, though large oral doses can cause stomach upset, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and headache.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take immunosuppressants (drugs given after transplants or for autoimmune disease) or pazopanib, a cancer medication. Both have moderate-severity interactions with the elderberry in this product.
No other drug types have documented interactions with the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take immunosuppressants or pazopanib, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product. Elderberry extract itself is generally well tolerated when properly prepared, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established in our data.
Talk it over with your own healthcare provider to see if it makes sense for what you're aiming for.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Mountain Meadow Herbs Elderberry Liquid has documented interactions with medications through its elderberry extract content.
The most serious concern is a moderate-severity interaction with pazopanib (Votrient), a cancer drug — one case reported severe nausea, loose stools, and liver injury when the two were combined. Elderberry also has a moderate interaction with immunosuppressants, drugs that calm your immune system after transplants or for autoimmune conditions, because elderberry may stimulate immune activity and potentially interfere with how those medications work.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Alternatingly, the glycerin in this product has no documented interactions with medications. Water, distilled, we could not check — we hold no interaction data for it.
Altogether, these interactions span 121 individual medications. If you take any prescription drugs — especially cancer treatments, immunosuppressants, or any other regular medication — use the checker below to see your exact medications before you start this product.
