What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Extra Strength Berry Dophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 10 active probiotic strains—a blend of Lactobacillus species (paracasei, casei, rhamnosus, plantarum, salivarius, and acidophilus), Bifidobacterium species (longum, breve, and lactis), and Streptococcus thermophilus. These are live microorganisms meant to support your gut bacteria balance.
The inactive ingredients are xylitol, sorbitol, cellulose, stearic acid, silica, natural berry flavors, malic acid, beet powder, and FOS (a type of prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence picture is mixed and largely uncertain. Lactobacillus acidophilus, one of the strains in this blend, is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium breve is possibly ineffective for age-related cognitive decline and sepsis. For most of the conditions studied—including allergic rhinitis, atopic disease, and others—the evidence is insufficient to rate whether these strains work.
The product's overall effectiveness depends partly on which health goal you're targeting and which strains may matter most for that condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The live bacteria in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, people who are seriously ill, immune-compromised, or in the hospital with central lines should exercise caution—there are rare but documented cases of infection (bacteremia and sepsis) from these probiotic strains in critically ill patients, especially infants.
Uncommon side effects from probiotics in this category include abdominal discomfort, flatulence, bloating, constipation, and rare reports of a dry cough. Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium breve are rated possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation, though limited data exist; for Lactobacillus acidophilus, pregnancy and lactation safety data are not on file.
Talk with your doctor before using if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, seriously ill, or immunocompromised.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, talk to your pharmacist or doctor about timing—antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of this probiotic. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic blend may be worth considering if you have IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or bacterial vaginosis and want a multi-strain option—but the evidence for most uses is still developing. If you take antibiotics, separate them from this product by a few hours so the antibiotic doesn't kill the beneficial bacteria.
Anyone who is critically ill, has a weakened immune system, or is hospitalized should check with their doctor first. Run your medications through the interaction checker below before you start.

Extra Strength Berry Dophilus by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Extra Strength Berry Dophilus by NOW is a 10-strain probiotic that has documented interactions with antibiotic drugs.
Three of the product's bacterial strains—Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium breve, and Lactobacillus acidophilus—can theoretically lose effectiveness if you take them at the same time as antibiotics, because antibiotics may kill the live organisms in the probiotic. This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
We were unable to check interaction data for five of the ten active ingredients: Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Bifidobacterium lactis. One ingredient, Streptococcus thermophilus, showed no documented interactions in our data.
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications. If you take antibiotics, the best approach is to separate the timing—take your antibiotic at one time of day and the probiotic several hours apart.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Extra Strength Berry Dophilus with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bifidobacterium longum BI-05
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium breve (Bb-03)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-14)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
