Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This supplement contains one active ingredient: 450 mg of java plum (jambolan) per capsule. The capsule itself is made from gelatin and water.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Jambolan product and its label doesn't state a use — see Jambolan's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold on java plum doesn't establish whether it works for diabetes or for venous leg ulcers—the data rated both uses as having insufficient reliable evidence. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research to prove it isn't there yet.

How safe is it?

Safety Information · database check
Some gaps

Safety data exists for these ingredients, but with some important gaps.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

The fruit itself is eaten as food in many parts of the world, but concentrated supplement doses haven't been well studied. The safety data advises against using jambolan supplements during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, so don't take this product if you're pregnant or nursing.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Jambolan.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 186 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check any diabetes or blood sugar medications you take—jambolan can lower blood glucose and may increase the risk of low blood sugar when combined with those drugs. Also check any medications metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP2C9 (which affects a wide range of drugs) before you start, since jambolan may slow that enzyme and raise drug levels.

The bottom line

Antidiabetes Drugs

Animal research shows that jambolan seed and bark extracts can lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, jambolan might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. This might increase the risk of hypoglycemia in some patients. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

There is some in vitro evidence that jambolan can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, concomitant use of jambolan with CYP2C9 substrates may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Sitagliptin (Januvia)

Animal research shows that jambolan seed extract reduces the sitagliptin maximum plasma concentration and area under the curve by 39% and 22%, respectively. However, blood glucose levels were actually reduced to a greater extent in mice taking jambolan and sitagliptin in combination when compared with either product taken alone. Theoretically, jambolan seed extract might alter the clearance of sitagliptin, although this may not alter the clinical effects of sitagliptin.

Java Plum 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Java Plum 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Java Plum 450 mg has a known interaction with 186 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Java Plum 450 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take java plum if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data advises against jambolan supplements during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough research on medicinal doses in those periods. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's right for you.
Does java plum actually work for blood sugar?
We don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works for diabetes. The fruit is eaten as food in many places, but the research on supplement doses for blood sugar control isn't there yet.
What is java plum?
Java plum is also called jambolan. It's a tropical fruit that's eaten as food in many parts of the world, and it's been used in traditional medicine. This supplement is a concentrated form of the fruit.
Will this increase my risk of low blood sugar if I take diabetes medication?
Yes—that's a real risk. Jambolan can lower blood glucose on its own, and when you add it to diabetes drugs, your blood sugar might drop too far. Monitor your blood glucose closely, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
Are there any side effects from taking java plum?
We don't have adverse effect data on file for this ingredient, and concentrated supplement doses haven't been well studied. The fruit is generally eaten without trouble, but talk with your pharmacist if you notice anything unusual.
