HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Glutamine 500 mg by Pure Encapsulations
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine at 500 mg per capsule. Glutamine is an amino acid your body makes and uses for gut health, immune function, and muscle recovery.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: cellulose, water, and ascorbyl palmitate (a form of vitamin C used as a preservative).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. It's possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma.
The evidence for those other uses isn't as strong, but the data we hold suggests it may help in those situations. For other uses, effectiveness data isn't established in our files.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects are belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and headache—mostly mild and gastrointestinal.
A few people have reported dizziness or, in rare cases with bipolar disorder, mood changes (mania or hypomania) at higher doses. If you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under your doctor's supervision.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The safety data we hold rates it likely safe in pregnancy, but not enough reliable data exists for breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice before using it while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Anticonvulsants (seizure medications) are the main medication type to double-check before taking this product. Glutamine may theoretically reduce how well these drugs work, though this hasn't been confirmed in humans.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this supplement is right for you if you're on any anticonvulsant.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may be worth considering if you have sickle cell disease or are recovering from surgery or critical illness. If you take anticonvulsants, check with your doctor or pharmacist first—the interaction is theoretical but important to discuss.
It's generally well tolerated, though GI side effects like bloating and diarrhea are common. Run this against your exact medications and health situation with your own healthcare provider before starting.
