Manganese Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Manganese against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: manganese, a mineral your body uses for bone health, metabolism, and nervous system function. The tablet also contains two inactive ingredients — cellulose and vegetable stearate — which are a binder and lubricant to hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Manganese is effective for manganese deficiency. For other conditions — hay fever (allergic rhinitis), osteoporosis, COPD, weight loss (obesity), and osteoarthritis — the evidence in our data is insufficient to rate whether it works.
That doesn't mean it doesn't help with those conditions; it means the data we hold doesn't establish it one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Manganese at normal dietary doses — the amounts you'd get from food and prenatal vitamins — is generally well tolerated. High-dose supplements are a different story.
Long-term use of very high doses carries a real risk of neurotoxicity, including Parkinson-like symptoms; one case involved irreversible Parkinson disease possibly tied to 100 mg daily for 2 to 4 years. There's also concern that high doses might damage the liver.
Stick to normal dietary intake unless a clinician specifically advises otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this manganese supplement, double-check if you're on antipsychotic drugs (risk of toxicity), quinolone antibiotics (levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin), or tetracycline antibiotics (doxycycline, tetracycline) — manganese can reduce how well these drugs are absorbed. Your pharmacist or doctor can tell you whether it's safe to take them together and if you need to space them out.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement works for manganese deficiency. If you're taking antipsychotics, quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics, or other prescription medications, check with your pharmacist or doctor before you start — manganese can interfere with how these drugs work.
Keep doses in the normal range and talk with your own healthcare provider if you're thinking about high-dose supplementation.

Manganese by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Douglas Laboratories' Manganese can interact with medications, primarily through its effects on drug absorption and metabolism.
The most serious concern is with antipsychotic drugs (Major severity), where manganese may theoretically increase the risk of manganese toxicity; hallucinations and behavioral changes have been reported in a patient taking haloperidol and manganese together. Manganese also moderately interacts with quinolone antibiotics and tetracycline antibiotics — both classes where manganese, as a charged mineral (multivalent cation), can reduce how much of the antibiotic your body absorbs, potentially lowering their effectiveness.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The interaction risk with antipsychotics, quinolones, and tetracyclines means you'll want to check your exact medications before starting this supplement. Altogether, these interactions span 83 individual medications.
If you take any of these drug types — or any other prescription medication — run it through the checker below or talk with your pharmacist before you add manganese.

Manganese
Antipsychotic Drugs
Theoretically, the risk for manganese toxicity might increase when taken with antipsychotic drugs.
Hallucinations and behavioral changes have been reported in a patient with liver disease who was taking haloperidol and manganese. Researchers speculate that taking manganese along with haloperidol, phenothiazine-derivatives, or other antipsychotic medications might increase the risk of manganese toxicity in some patients.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, manganese might reduce the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced quinolone absorption have been reported between quinolones and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, manganese might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced tetracycline absorption have been reported between tetracyclines and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.
