Hallucinations and behavioral changes have been reported in a patient with liver disease who was taking haloperidol and manganese. Researchers speculate that taking manganese along with haloperidol, phenothiazine-derivatives, or other antipsychotic medications might increase the risk of manganese toxicity in some patients.

Here's the gist with manganese and Vraylar (cariprazine). This isn't a case of one changing the other's blood levels. Instead, the concern is that pairing extra manganese with an antipsychotic might make manganese itself more likely to build up in the body, and high manganese can be hard on the nervous system. I'll be honest with you: this is theoretical and based on a single old report involving a different drug (haloperidol) in someone who also had liver disease. The evidence here is weak.

Still, both manganese excess and cariprazine can affect movement and behavior, so layering them adds uncertainty. Most people get plenty of manganese from food and don't need a supplement at all. Before adding a concentrated manganese product, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Cariprazine Used For?

Brand name: Vraylar

Vraylar (cariprazine) is approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and teens 13 and older, and to treat acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and children 10 and older. In adults, it is also approved for depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression).

Additionally, Vraylar is approved as an add-on therapy alongside antidepressants for adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) who need extra help beyond their current antidepressant alone.
