Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Gemifloxacin
Gemifloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Manganese interacts with.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced quinolone absorption have been reported between quinolones and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with gemifloxacin (Factive) and a manganese supplement: minerals like manganese carry a positive electrical charge, and antibiotics in this family can latch onto those charged minerals in your stomach. When that happens, the two clump together and your gut can't absorb the antibiotic as well. The worry isn't more side effects, it's the opposite, you may end up with less gemifloxacin in your system, which could mean your pneumonia or bronchitis doesn't clear the way it should.
This is a theoretical concern based on how similar minerals like calcium and iron behave, so it's not heavily proven for manganese specifically. The easy fix most pharmacists suggest is spacing the doses apart, but please check with your own pharmacist or doctor before changing how you take either one.

About Manganese
What is Manganese?
- Bone health support
- Antioxidant and enzyme support
- Filling dietary gaps
- Metabolism support
- Wound healing
Manganese is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for bone formation, metabolism, and antioxidant defense, and most people get enough from a normal diet. Supplements may help if you have a genuine deficiency, but too much can be harmful—especially to the nervous system—so do not take high doses without guidance from a pharmacist or doctor.
About Gemifloxacin
What Is Gemifloxacin Used For?
Brand name: Factive
-
Gemifloxacin is used to treat pneumonia. Gemifloxacin may also be used to treat bronchitis but should not be used for this condition if there are other treatment options. Gemifloxacin is in a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It works by killing bacteria that cause infections.
-
Antibiotics such as gemifloxacin do not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
